I want to share with you today something I’ve been reflecting on recently, that I think many of us can get caught up in…
It’s the idea that if we just do enough “inner work,” or think positively enough, or if we can just elevate our consciousness enough… our lives will become problem-free.
I mean… it sounds nice, right? 😅
There is no denying now, that there are problems in the world. Between the immense challenges we see and witness in the media and the lives of those around us, and the personal problems and transitions many of us are navigating… the problems in life can feel daunting at times. It’s easy to wish all our problems would just go away.
But the reality is that the material world we reside in now is inherently unstable. It is always shifting, changing, and presenting us with new problems and layers to navigate. Which is the point. And we chose to be here to experience it.
The “I Am” and the Gift of Difficulty
I’ve long enjoyed reading and studying the teachings of Rudolf Steiner, the 20th-century Austrian philosopher and mystic who founded Anthroposophy. He had such a profound way of bridging the gap between the scientific world and the spiritual world, always pointing back to Christ and the “I Am” within.
Recently, I went through his guidelines for observing the 12 Holy Nights, the sacred time period between Christmas (December 25th) and Epiphany (January 6th).
Steiner taught that during these twelve days and nights, the “Spiritual Sun” illuminates the earth from the inside out. It’s a time when the veil is thin and we can sow the seeds for the twelve months of the coming year. One thing that stands out to me from his 12 Holy Nights teachings is this:
When we view life through our spiritual self, we realize we attract our own problems and challenges.
Not in a “Law of Attraction” sense, like we’re not thinking positively enough to be free of problems…
Rather, Steiner suggests that our Higher Self, our “I Am,” brings challenges into our lives for the express purpose of our soul growth. He teaches that everything we encounter is actually an effect of something we set in motion in a past life.
This can sound heavy… But Steiner illustrates that: “Everything we have done was for the express purpose of becoming aware of our I Am.”
So the problems and situations we are facing now are for the express purpose of helping us become more aware and more embodied in our I Am Presence.
“Problems” as Spiritual “Nutrients”
In this view, problems aren’t “bad luck” or a sign of our failure. They are the specific “nutrients” our souls need to resolve karma and wake up to our true nature.
Think about how a plant needs more than just sunlight to grow; it also needs the cycles of day and night, the nutrients in the soil, the water of rain, and even the “decay” of compost to provide minerals.
Our souls are much the same. The problems we face in our lives and in the world are often the very forces that empower our soul growth, and deepen our awareness and embodiment of I Am Presence.
Finding the Point of Rest
The Gospel of Mary Magdalene reflects this idea as well, suggesting that the material world is unstable and in constant flux. Instead of trying to fix the instability, Mary teaches us to find the “Point of Rest” within a stillness that remains unaffected by the chaos. She says:
“From this time on will I attain to rest… in the silence of a moment.”
The real shift happens when we stop wishing for a problem-free life. Instead, we pour our attention into connecting with the Divine. By entering that inner place of rest and stillness, we tap into Divine Presence. This presence will guide and carry us through all the problems and challenges we face.
When you can meet a challenge with the awareness of your “I Am,” you are no longer a victim of your circumstances. You become the observer. You find an inner peace amidst the storm.
Spirit is much less interested in us having “perfect” lives than in how we respond to what is in front of us. I think the very idea of a “problem-free” life… and the perfection we long for comes from our soul remembering life eternal. Life after death when we fully return to unity with Spirit.
But while we’re here now…
As Jesus said in John 16:33: “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
Which means we can too! Steiner teaches that:
“Our path is one of pain and sorrow as played out in the life of Jesus, ‘the Christed One.’ We follow in His footsteps for He is that great I Am who walked this earth in completeness. He shows us the way. It is our choice how we meet the consequences of our own actions; we can suffer in pain or we can experience the joy that comes with being aware that we are fulfilling our purpose.”
The Power of the “I Am” Observer
So if things feel heavy for you today, and the problems in your life and the world seem too great… remember in this moment you are exactly where you need to be for your soul growth and deeper remembrance of your I Am Presence.
Divine Presence is available to you within, right now, exactly as things are.
And you have everything you need within you to navigate this moment.
So for now, stop trying to fix it all for a second… and allow yourself to simply rest in the stillness and Divine Presence within…
Which will guide you through and support you so well.
With love and blessings,
